San Marcos River OK despite drought

Water pressure in the San Marcos River is lower than it’s been in years. The river's spring flow measured in at about 95 cubic feet per second on Labor Day. That's half the average and the lowest in 11 years.

But thanks to the newly redesigned Rio Vista Dam, activity level in the area remains high. This Labor Day kayakers and tubers showed up as early as 6 a.m. enjoy the consistent rushing rapids.

"We are pretty lucky to have water here. This spring has never gone dry, but everything else is pretty dry right now," kayaker Ben Kvanli said.

The low water levels haven’t been bad enough to affect the economy or activity on the San Marcos River.

Justin Garza, the assistant manager at the Lion's Club Tube Rental, said sales are actually up. He estimates they rent out about 2,000 tubes each weekend day.

"The [Rio Vista] Falls have a lot to do with it because everything's been redone, the three tube shoots instead of the one. Families are loving it down there. It's packed every day," he said.

Unlike the Guadalupe, Blanco or Comal Rivers, the San Marcos River has been open to tubers every day this season.
