Learn to Kayak

Dear BSA Leader,

Don’t miss the water that we have been blessed with this year!  Come kayaking. . .

Whether you are learning the basics for the Kayak Award or you want to get ready for a trip with the Whitewater Merit Badge you can do it right here in Texas for the lowest prices in the nation!  In fact we will come to you for the Kayak Award to start you paddling with stability and style close to home!  If you can make it to one of our three whitewater parks in San Marcos, Dallas, or Ft. Worth then we can advance your skills through the esteemed BSA Whitewater Merit Badge program.

You will be taught by Olympian Ben Kvanli and his team who have been teaching Boy Scouts for 24 years now on the rivers of Texas and beyond at half the price of most kayak schools!  Give your boys the inspirational experience of learning from an Olympian, and US National Champion while enjoying the best of Texas’s outdoors!  In fact our rivers and streams make up the biggest public trail system around (840 miles on the Brazos River, over 500 on the Colorado River, 250 on the San Marcos and Guadalupe Rivers).   So, the beauty of kayaking is that it puts you right where you want to be near the water.  To be honest, it is usually too hot to get far from the water around here, so that is why I think that kayaking is the best way to get outdoors.

We usually have between 5 to 15 participants and anyone is welcome to join us - just register here and get ready to have a ball!!  If you only want to paddle for one day - simply sign up on the calendar for that day. One day will still qualify you for the Kayak Merit Badge, or just a half day will meet the requirements of the Kayak Award.  You will make friends and if you want, you''ll get started on training for a trip or two to one of the beautiful locations we go each year.

If you have questions you can also call Ben at 512-203-0093. See you there, now here are some details:

The BSA Whitewater Merit Badge class is a great immersion into the world of paddle sports! This course can also be used as a great way to advance your skills! We love to tailor this course to your needs!

Friday 6:30pm-9:00pm. This gives us a chance to get to know everyone, and find out how we can best meet your needs. We will then work on the fundamentals of exiting your kayak and if you are ready -  kayak rolling.

Saturday 8:00am-5:00pm. We will have a full day of water immersion! We will start with good explanations of the boat and equipment, and then basic water safety. Soon, you will be in your boat working on balance and correct stroke technique in order to run the rapids at the New Rio Vista Falls Park! We will run these drops, as well as work on maneuvering in the current and reading water. Before lunch you will be surfing!

At lunch (we provide) we will watch a video highlighting swift-water rescue, and will review the mornings progress! After lunch we will work our way downstream from the Power Olympic Outdoor Center, to our lower loop rapids. You will get to play on a 4ft drop and continue to work on crossing currents and maneuvering with the water. If you choose you can run our 14ft. Graduation Falls at the end of the day! Or not, your choice.  We will then have just a short paddle back to the center!! No shuttle needed.

Sunday 8:00am-3:00pm. You will have an opportunity to further develop your paddling skills on another beautiful stretch of river. Depending on the skill of the group we will either head to the Comal River, the Guadalupe River, or the lower San Marcos, River. We will work extensively on rolling. This course may be modified for Flatwater, Recreational Kayaks, and Canoes!! You may also do only part of the course if it would fit your schedule best.

Need a weekend boost to work on your intermediate whitewater skills? Give us a call at 512.203.0093 We would love to work with you!! Price: $190/person - full weekend. Full Weekend Course includes instruction.  Gear rental is an additional $60/day!

Total weekend cost is $190.00 Classes are $95 per day - you can do 1 day or 2.  A deposit is required to hold your spot and/or gear rental.  The $60 will be applied towards your class.

Your technique defines your enjoyment out on the water.  Do your bad habits hold you back from having fun?  "This may not be rocket science, but it takes some practice to get the easy, fluid stroke which makes your body feel good whenever you go paddling.  Paddling is meant to be fun, but all to often I see people making paddling into real work!  I compare the difference between good and bad paddling to the difference between taking a walk in the park, and sitting stressed at the office all day.  I want you to feel refreshed from your paddle, not tense and tired as a result of a trip.  So, come see what a little paddle finesse, and water feel can do to make your paddling more fun for less effort.”
